Unit Optimization
First things first, before we can send a unit to an AG, we need to focus on making our first unit as strong as possible. Didn't get it right the first time? no worries! that just means resetting you units for 20 gold, you should see the option after removing it from your active army units.
Why is this important?
If we divide our resources over 5 units then make them fight a unit that has the same resources used, that unit can easily defeat the 5 units that cost equal resources. The big difference? Our maxed out unit will take out about 5 times the number of reserves!

A quick note!
Parts are so important to the strength of your unit that before you decide what unit you are going to choose to focus on you may want to compare the strength and quantity of the parts blueprints you have for each unit! if you have high tier blueprints for a particular unit you may want to focus on it.

How to pick and max your unit
You must decide which unit you and your particular group, or the alliance as a whole, believe to be the most useful. Combine this consideration with your parts and parts blueprint inventory, as well as your current investments in captains to make your decision. Remember the Captain level plays an important factor by boosting your units HP and Firepower, so absent another very compelling reason you should always place your strongest captain first.
After we've picked the unit that we will be working on it is highly recommended that you remove the remaining units and reset them, so that we can be relatively sure all of our resources are available.

Firstly, we need to determine the ideal level of the unit. This can range all the way up to 200, but if we are going to be in a limited battlefield for this build there's no reason to waste the resources taking it to a higher level than it needs to be.

Once leveled the next order of business is applying prototype pieces to transform the unit into its modern equivalent (if this applies.) You'll find that leveling modern units through the prototype system offers better value than the traditional parts and modification system.

Once modernized, or if the process is still not available to you, we move to the traditional modification system. Here you may need to make some decisions if you don't have enough cogs to fully mod a unit. Consider that you only need to open the modification pathway with the first level to get to the next. While it appears that modification costs and benefits are even as they increase in price not all units will benefit equally from all buffs. While the Super Heavy unit benefits greatly from HP increases the same cannot be said for artillery units! so pick and choose carefully if you must.

Parts!

Next let's go into the unit's parts system. If you haven't checked lately, make sure that you check to be sure all of your lessor tier (I usually auto disassemble bronze and silver) parts have been dissembled in the disassembly plant. It is also worth a look to make sure you have opened all your material chests as they tend to hide in the parts workshop under the blueprints section, all the way at the bottom. This is also a great time to get rid of your unnecessary parts blueprints in that same section and buy a few new ones, you never know when you might strike Gold, ++ that is!

Once all of our part prep work is done, we can go into the unit's part section. I've done some testing and usually if the part is recommended by the red dot its usually going to give you the best result. However our wrench system may change this! so I like to go into the wrench system before I actually place any parts. Max out your wrenches and proceed to building and equipping parts.

Use your common sense here, some parts benefit some units more. Gold++ parts are expensive and when you destroy them you only get half the materials you put in back (not true of any level lower than G++.) If you are forced to choose between leveling the armor of a super heavy or the firepower of an artillery unit, start with them most relevant part to that unit first. As we have placed all our wrenches into this unit, don't hold back, remember one strong unit is best for AG's!
A Notable Exception

As you continue in your warpath journey you may run across a situation where you want to be able to defend territory while contributing to an ag. In this case it can be considered optimal strategy to level each secondary unit to 60 before you max out your main unit. We do this because parts are so powerful and hitting level 60 allows us to equip parts in all slots. Be careful when applying this, make sure these units are great defensive units, you wouldn't want to do it for say, infantry that does virtually no damage when garrisoned in your base.
